Will I find mountaineering ice axes and snow pickets available at decathlon.com.gr?

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find a full range of certified alpinism and mountaineering gear, such as alpine ice axes, snow pickets, crampons, ice screws, as well as specialized anchors. The collection includes lightweight and highly durable models from specialized Decathlon brands, meeting all international UIAA and CE safety standards for technical glacier descents and ascents.

When do I use a snow picket instead of an ice screw?

The choice depends on the surface composition:
• Snow pickets are used in soft, packed, or hard-packed snow, where the surface is not solid enough to thread an ice screw.
• Ice screws are suitable exclusively for solid, hard, clear ice.
In soft snow, an ice screw offers zero holding power, making a snow picket the only safe anchor option.

How deep should a snow picket be driven to hold?

For maximum safety, a snow picket should be driven fully into the snow, leaving only the sling attachment point exposed to minimize leverage.
In cases where snow is extremely soft or semi-frozen, the most effective technique is horizontal placement (deadman anchor), where the picket is buried horizontally at a depth of 30-50 cm in the snow and attached to a sling at its center.

Which placement angle gives the highest strength to a snow picket?

When placed vertically, a snow picket should be driven at a slight angle of 15° to 20° opposite the direction of the expected pull (kick-back angle).
This angle allows the picket to compress the snow in front of it when load is applied, increasing its static strength and preventing it from tipping over or pulling out forward.

Which construction material best withstands repeated impacts?

Snow pickets are primarily made from high-strength aluminum (such as 6061-T6 or 7075 aluminum alloy), which offers the ideal combination of low weight and high structural rigidity without bending.
For ice axes and ice screws, the head and pick are crafted from forged steel (chromoly steel), providing maximum resistance to repeated impacts against hard ice or rock.

Do I need a separate carrying case for snow pickets?

Yes, highly recommended! Snow pickets and ice axes feature sharp edges and teeth that can puncture or tear your backpack and other gear.
Using dedicated protective covers (protectors) for the ice axe pick and sharp picket ends ensures safe transport both on the outside and inside of your pack.
