Mountaineering Ice Axe Leashes

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find certified ice axe leashes for mountaineering and technical ice climbing. Our collection includes adjustable wrist leashes, elastic double tethers for technical ice axes, as well as protective accessories from specialized Decathlon brands, meeting all international UIAA and CE safety standards.

In classic winter hiking and mountaineering with a single ice axe, using a wrist leash depends on the terrain:
• A wrist leash ensures you won't lose your axe if it slips from your grip while walking.
• However, on zig-zag routes where you frequently change direction, a leash can delay quickly switching the axe to your uphill hand. For this reason, many mountaineers prefer either not using a leash on easy terrain or using an elastic tether attached to their harness.

Most classic leashes are universally compatible, as they loop through the hole in the axe head or tighten around the shaft.
However, for technical ice tools featuring ergonomic handles and finger rests, elastic double tethers attached to the harness via carabiners are preferred, allowing full freedom of movement without obstructing your grip.

Ice axe leashes and elastic tethers are designed exclusively to prevent accidental loss of gear (typically rated at 2 kN to 2.5 kN, approx. 200-250 kg) and are not personal protection or anchor devices.
You should never hang your body weight from an ice axe leash as a sole belay point, as it is not built to sustain dynamic fall loads.
