Will I find active protection camming devices available at decathlon.com.gr?

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find certified active protection camming devices (cams / friends / SLCDs - Spring-Loaded Camming Devices) for mountaineering and traditional climbing. The collection includes individual sizes and complete cam sets from specialized Decathlon brands, meeting all international UIAA and CE (EN 12276) safety standards.

What expansion range does each size of camming device cover?

Each cam size covers a specific crack width expansion range, which is stated in millimeters (mm) on the device.
• Small sizes cover narrow cracks approximately from 9 mm to 20 mm.
• Medium sizes cover cracks from 20 mm to 45 mm.
• Large sizes cover wide cracks from 45 mm to over 100 mm.
For a safe placement, the cam lobes should be retracted to 40%–60% of their total range when placed in the crack.

How often do the springs on a camming device need lubrication?

Maintenance and lubrication of a cam's springs and axles should be performed 1 to 2 times per year, or immediately after use in dusty, sandy, or salty environments (e.g. sea cliff climbing).
First clean the device with lukewarm water and a soft brush, allow it to dry completely, and then apply a drop of specialized dry lubricant (PTFE/paraffin lubricant) to the axles and springs, being careful not to get lubricant on the textile sling.

Is it safe to place a camming device in an outward-flaring crack?

No, placing a cam in an outward-flaring crack carries a significantly increased risk of slippage and protection failure during a fall.
Camming devices rely on friction and the outward expansion angle of the lobes. If the crack widens in the direction of pull, the lobes may slide out. Flaring cracks require advanced placement experience, specially designed cams, or alternative protection devices.

What is the difference between single-axle and double-axle camming devices?

The difference lies in head design, expansion range, and functionality:
• Single-axle cams feature a single central pivot axle. They are lighter and more compact, but offer a slightly smaller expansion range per size.
• Double-axle cams feature two parallel axles, offering a wider expansion range per size. Additionally, the dual axles allow the lobes to act as passive protection if the cam becomes fully tipped open.
