Will I find mountaineering quickdraws and carabiners at decathlon.com.gr?

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find a full range of certified carabiners and quickdraws for climbing, mountaineering, and alpinism. The collection includes non-locking carabiners (straight and bent gates, wire gates), locking carabiners (screwgate or automatic twist-lock), as well as complete quickdraw sets in various lengths, meeting all strict UIAA and CE (EN 12275) safety standards.

What are carabiners and where did they get their name?

A carabiner is a metallic connector equipped with a spring-loaded gate used to quickly and securely connect gear, ropes, and anchors.
The name originates from the German word "Karabinerhaken", meaning "hook for a carbine". Historically, it was used by 18th-century mounted soldiers (carabiniers) to quickly attach their carbine rifles to their belts or slings without dropping them.

When do I prefer steel quickdraws?

Steel quickdraws are preferred over aluminum in very specific scenarios:
1. On permanently installed fixed draws at climbing crags, where gear remains outdoors indefinitely.
2. In indoor climbing gyms, where continuous rope friction rapidly wears down lighter aluminum.
Steel offers immense resistance to friction wear from dirty or sandy ropes, although it is much heavier to carry in a backpack.

How do I recognize dangerous grooving on a carabiner's body?

Grooving forms inside the carabiner's basket from repeated rope friction containing dirt or grit.
It is considered dangerous and requires immediate retirement of the carabiner when:
• The groove depth exceeds 1 mm (or more than 10% of the metal diameter).
• The edges of the groove become sharp, as a sharp aluminum edge can slice a climbing rope like a knife during a fall!

Do I need a locking carabiner at every protection point along a route?

No, intermediate protection points on a sport route use standard quickdraws with non-locking carabiners to allow fast and effortless single-handed rope clipping.
Locking carabiners are required at critical points where accidental disconnection would be fatal: at the main belay station (relais), on the belay device (tuber/grigri), on personal anchor lanyards, and on abseil anchors.
