Mountaineering Accessory Cords

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find certified mountaineering accessory cords (cordelettes) for your mountain adventures. The collection includes cords of various diameters (from 2 mm to 7 mm) in various lengths or per meter, made from durable polyamide (nylon) or Dyneema/Kevlar from specialized Decathlon brands, meeting all international UIAA and CE (EN 564) safety standards.

For tying a friction Prusik, Machard, or Autoblock knot on a main climbing rope, the most suitable cord diameter is 5 mm to 6 mm (6 mm being ideal).
The general rule dictates that the cord diameter should be roughly 2 mm to 3 mm smaller than the main rope diameter, allowing the knot to create sufficient friction and bite effectively when loaded.

Yes, the difference in static strength is significant!
A typical 6 mm cord has a minimum static strength of around 7.2 kN (approx. 750 kg).
A 7 mm cord offers a static strength of around 9.8 kN to 10 kN (approx. 1,000 kg).
For this reason, 7 mm cords are preferred for building central belay stations and equalized anchors, whereas 6 mm cords are ideal for Prusik loops and utility uses.

Naturally! Accessory cords are essential tools in ice climbing and alpinism.
They are primarily used for constructing ice abseil anchors (such as the Abalakov / V-thread technique), where a 6 mm or 7 mm cord is threaded through intersecting holes drilled with an ice screw, creating a highly reliable and cost-effective bail anchor.

Yes, prolonged exposure to solar/UV radiation gradually degrades textile fibers (polyamide), making them brittle and reducing overall cord strength.
If a cord has lost its original color, appears faded or stiff, or has been left exposed to the sun permanently at a crag (e.g. fixed rappels), it must be replaced immediately.
