How do thermal base layers work and why do they keep you warm?

Thermal base layers do not generate heat on their own, but act as a "thermal barrier." They trap the natural body heat emitted into the air between the fabric fibers, preventing heat loss. At the same time, they are made from technical materials that quickly wick sweat away to the outside, keeping your skin dry — as moisture is the main factor causing the sensation of cold.

Which level of thermal base layer do I need for the mountain in winter?

For demanding mountain conditions in winter (skiing, mountaineering, hiking in low temperatures), you need high thermal insulation base layers (High Warmth). Look for models with a brushed fleece interior or made from merino wool, which offer maximum protection from the cold, especially when combined with a fleece jacket and a waterproof ski jacket in a three-layer system.

Should thermal base layers fit tight?

Yes, they should fit snugly ("second skin") without restricting breathing or freedom of movement. When the thermal base layer sits directly against the skin, it instantly absorbs sweat before it cools down, while more effectively trapping the thin layer of warm air around your body.

Are there thermal base layers in kids' sizes?

Certainly! We feature a complete range of kids' thermal tops and leggings specially designed for children's needs. They are made from soft materials with a stretchy fit to provide warmth and comfort at school, during sports practice, or playing in the snow, and pair perfectly with kids' socks and kids' boots for complete protection.
