Can I find surf gear and equipment on decathlon.com.gr?
Of course you can find a comprehensive range of surfing equipment and gear on decathlon.com.gr! Discover a variety of surfboards—both foam and hard boards—neoprene wetsuits for every season, technical swimsuits, UV t-shirts, as well as all the essential accessories like leashes, wax, board bags, and fins, offering everything you need to catch waves safely with top-quality equipment.
Can I go surfing in both summer and winter conditions?
Yes, surfing is a year-round sport, and in Greece, the best and most consistent swells actually occur during autumn and winter. The main difference lies in the thermal protection gear required; in the summer, you can surf comfortably in a technical swimsuit or a thin shorty wetsuit (2mm) accompanied by a UV t-shirt for sun protection, whereas in the winter, a full-body neoprene wetsuit with a thickness of 4/3mm or 5/4mm is absolutely essential, often combined with neoprene boots and a hood to maintain body temperature in cold waters.
Which surfing accessories are essential for beginners?
In addition to your surfboard and wetsuit, the absolutely essential accessories you need to have with you are:
The Leash (safety strap): The cord that tethers your leg to the board. This is your "lifesaver" because it prevents the board from drifting away when you wipe out, while also protecting other surfers around you.
Surf Wax: Applied to the deck of the board (where you stand) to create a non-slip surface. Without it, the board will be slick and you won’t be able to stand up.
A microfiber Poncho: Ideal for drying off quickly and for changing out of your swimsuit or wetsuit easily and discreetly right on the beach.
Get your hands on this must-have gear and enjoy your first steps into surfing safely and with plenty of fun!
Are there any specific tips for beginner surfers that I should know before starting out?
Yes, surfing requires patience and respect for the ocean. The most important rules for your starting phase are:
Start with a foam board: Do not rush into buying a small, hard surfboard. Large foam boards provide the buoyancy you need to learn how to paddle and take off correctly, while preventing injuries.
Learn the priority rules (Surf Etiquette): The surfer closest to the peak where the wave breaks always has priority. Never "steal" another surfer's wave (dropping in).
Always check the weather and currents: Before entering the water, observe the beach, learn where rocks or strong rip currents are located, and if possible, take your first lessons with a certified instructor to build the right foundations safely.
By following these basic rules, your introduction to surfing will be easy, fun, and safe!
