Will I find mountaineering lanyards available at decathlon.com.gr?

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find certified lanyards (self-belay slings / PAS) for mountaineering, climbing, and via ferrata. The collection includes single and double dynamic lanyards, adjustable lanyards, as well as complete sets with energy absorbers, meeting all international UIAA and CE safety standards.

What is a mountaineering lanyard and how does it help?

A mountaineering lanyard is a specialized webbing sling or segment of dynamic rope that connects the climber's harness directly to an anchor point (relais) or safety steel cable.
It serves to directly self-belay the climber when resting at a belay station, preparing for abseiling, or moving along via ferrata routes, ensuring they remain continuously clipped in and protected against falls.

What is the difference between an elastic lanyard and a static lanyard?

The difference lies in energy absorption and behavior during a fall:
• Dynamic/elastic lanyards (made from dynamic rope) possess elasticity and can absorb part of the impact force in a short fall, offering significantly greater safety.
• Static lanyards (made from dyneema or polyester webbing) lack elasticity entirely. They are used exclusively for static positioning and resting under tension, as even a minimal fall onto a static lanyard generates dangerously high impact forces on both the body and anchor.

What lanyard length facilitates quick clipping point transitions?

For rapid and flexible anchor point transitions, an asymmetrical double lanyard (e.g., one 40 cm arm and one 75 cm arm) or an adjustable lanyard is the ideal choice.
The short arm allows a direct, snug attachment near the belay anchor, while the longer arm provides the necessary reach to access and clip the next anchor before unclipping the first.

When should I retire a lanyard?

A lanyard must be replaced immediately in the following cases:
1. After any severe fall or heavy shock load.
2. If you notice wear, fraying, cut stitching, or friction burns.
3. If it is a via ferrata set and the energy absorber has deployed/torn.
4. After 5-10 years from the manufacture date (depending on each product's information), due to natural aging of textile fibers caused by UV radiation.
