Mountaineering Stoppers

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find certified mountaineering and climbing stoppers (stoppers / nuts / chocks). The collection includes individual sizes, complete stopper sets across various sizes, as well as specialized extraction tools, meeting all international UIAA and CE safety standards.

Stoppers (or nuts) are passive protection devices—typically metallic wedges (usually aluminum) mounted on a wire cable.
They are used in traditional climbing and mountaineering to create temporary protection points or belay stations in natural rock cracks without causing permanent damage to the environment, as they are fully removed after the ascent.

For proper placement of a stopper, follow these steps:
1. Choose the size that fits the constriction of the crack precisely.
2. Place the stopper in the wider section of the crack and slide it down toward the narrowing section in the direction of anticipated load.
3. Ensure the metallic head makes maximum surface contact with the rock walls.
4. Apply a sharp, firm tug downward to seat and "lock" the wedge securely in place.

To remove a stopper that is firmly wedged in a crack after weighting or a fall, a nut key (nut tool / extractor) is used.
This is a slim, metallic tool featuring a hook and flat top, inserted into the crack below the stopper to push it upward (opposite to the wedging direction) or dislodge the wire cable without damaging the gear.
