Mountaineering Blockers
Will I find mountaineering blockers available at decathlon.com.gr?
Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find certified mechanical rope blockers/ascenders for climbing, mountaineering, and caving. Our collection includes hand ascenders with ergonomic grips, chest ascenders, compact emergency blockers, as well as specialized rope clamps from specialized Decathlon brands, meeting all international UIAA and CE safety standards.
What is a blocker and what is its purpose in mountaineering?
A blocker (rope ascender) is a mechanical device that allows a rope to slide freely in one direction but automatically locks in the opposite direction when load is applied.
It is mainly used for ascending fixed ropes (jumaring/rope ascending), hauling heavy loads, rescue and hauling systems (e.g. crevasse or cave rescues), as well as self-belay backups in specialized mountaineering maneuvers.
How does the toothed cam of a blocker work on the rope?
A blocker features a rotating toothed cam with small steel teeth and a return spring.
When you push the device upward, the cam recedes allowing smooth gliding. However, when downward weight is applied, the cam rotates and the teeth bite into the rope sheath, pressing it firmly against the blocker's body. Additionally, the teeth feature self-cleaning slots to shed mud, snow, or ice, ensuring a secure grip even on frozen ropes.
What is the difference between a hand ascender and a chest ascender?
The difference lies in design, attachment position, and usage:
• A hand ascender (jumar) features a spacious, ergonomic handle for comfortable gripping with gloves and connects to a foot loop to push your body upward.
• A chest ascender is more compact, lacks a handle, and attaches flat against your harness and chest strap, keeping your torso close to the rope and automatically holding the height gained with every step.
What rope diameter range does a typical blocker cover?
Most standard mountaineering blockers are designed to operate on single static or dynamic ropes with diameters ranging from 8 mm to 13 mm.
Ultralight emergency blockers are also available that can work on thinner ropes (8 mm to 11 mm) or even webbing slings.
You must always check each product's specifications before use.
Do I need a blocker when ascending a fixed rope?
Yes, a blocker is the primary tool for safely and efficiently ascending a fixed rope.
Typically, a combination of a hand ascender (with a foot loop) and a chest ascender or secondary backup blocker is used, allowing you to "climb" the rope using the power of your legs without straining your arms.
