Weightlifting Belts

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find a full collection of weightlifting belts, designed to provide maximum stability and protection for your lower back. We feature lightweight velcro belts as well as sturdy leather buckle belts for very heavy loads. This equipment offers exceptional durability and an ergonomic fit, allowing you to carry out your workouts with total safety and confidence. For comprehensive protection during heavy training, you can pair them perfectly with wrist wraps or weightlifting straps!

A weightlifting belt works by increasing intra-abdominal pressure, creating a stable "wall" for your abs and lower back muscles to push against. This offers additional stabilization to the spine and lower back during heavy loaded exercises, reducing compressive forces. At the same time, it allows for greater force transfer, helping you lift heavier weights with increased safety and confidence.

To find the correct size, measure your waist circumference at belly button height (not where you wear your pants) while holding the tape measure firm and breathing normally. Then, consult the size guide on the product page. The belt should fit snugly but still allow you to take a deep diaphragmatic breath. If you are between two sizes, opt for the smaller size in a nylon velcro belt or the larger size in a leather buckle belt.

Their main difference lies in their stiffness and flexibility during exercises. A nylon belt is lighter, more flexible, and comfortably conforms to the body, closing with velcro to allow quick micro-adjustments—making it ideal for functional training (CrossFit), medium-weight exercises, or circuit workouts. On the other hand, a leather belt is rigid, extremely sturdy, and provides maximum support, making it the top choice for Powerlifting and very heavy lifts (such as deep squats or deadlifts), as it does not yield under heavy pressure.

As a general rule, you wear a weightlifting belt primarily during multi-joint, heavy exercises where the spine experiences significant vertical load, such as squats, deadlifts, standing overhead presses, and heavy rows. You do not need to wear it for isolation exercises (e.g., bicep curls, tricep extensions), machine exercises, during warm-ups, or light functional sets.

No, this is a common myth! Research has shown that using a belt does not reduce abdominal and back muscle activation; on the contrary, it provides a surface for core muscles to push against (bracing), often increasing their muscular activity. However, it is important not to rely on it exclusively during every light set, allowing your core to develop natural stability as well.
