Spearfishing Buoys & Floats

The buoy is the most critical tool for your personal safety and survival at sea. Its primary role is to warn passing speedboats, boats, and jet skis that a diver is currently underwater. Because a diver is almost invisible when surfacing, the buoy prevents fatal accidents, as by law boats must maintain a distance of at least 300 meters from it. Additionally, it serves as a resting spot if you get a cramp and as a place to hang your catch.

According to Greek legislation (P.D. 373/85), the underwater activity marker must be plastic, yellow in color, and carry a yellow flag with a diagonal red line, displaying the letters Υ.Δ. (Underwater Activity). The buoy must be visible under normal conditions from a distance of at least 300 meters.
Note: Although bright red or orange buoys (international standards) are widely available on the market, Greek law explicitly defines the yellow color. Furthermore, the diver is required to move within a radius of up to 50 meters from their buoy.

The legislation does not place a limit on how far out into the open sea you can go, but it explicitly defines which areas you must stay away from. Spearfishing is strictly prohibited at a distance of less than 200 meters from areas where people normally swim, especially on organized or crowded beaches. It is also prohibited at a distance of less than 200 meters from port works, shipping markers, anchored ships, as well as from the clearly marked nets of professional fishermen. Finally, the activity is entirely banned inside ports, vessel transit zones, and anchorage entry/exit points.

To prevent the material of the buoy from bursting and to make it last for many years, follow these steps:
After every fishing trip, rinse it with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and any fish blood. If you are going to store it for a long time, deflate it partially. Never leave it fully inflated in enclosed spaces (e.g., in the trunk of a car), because heat expands the air and can cause the seams to split. Let it dry in a shaded area, as prolonged exposure to the hot sun destroys the PVC or nylon, "burns" the colors, and causes them to fade, reducing its visibility in the water.
