Can I find marine binoculars, compasses & sailing signaling items available at decathlon.com.gr?

Of course! At decathlon.com.gr you will find a specialized range of marine binoculars, compasses, and essential signaling items for the safe navigation of your boat. Our collection includes waterproof binoculars, often with a built-in compass, hand bearing compasses, as well as safety equipment for the boat.

What should I look for when buying marine sailing binoculars?

For use at sea, binoculars must have specific features:
Magnification & Diameter (The 7x50 rule): 7x magnification is the ideal limit for a steady image on a boat moving with the waves, while a 50mm lens allows high light intake, which is essential at dusk or in cloudy conditions.
Waterproofing & Buoyancy: They must be 100% waterproof (often nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging) and ideally floating in case they fall into the sea.
Built-in compass: Helps in immediately locating and taking bearings of other vessels or landmarks on shore.

How does a marine sailing compass work and when is it necessary?

A marine compass works based on the Earth's magnetic field, submerged in a special liquid to dampen boat vibrations. A fixed steering compass is permanently installed in the cockpit and helps the helmsman maintain a steady course, while a hand bearing compass is used to find your position on a nautical chart by sighting fixed landmarks (e.g., lighthouses, capes).
It is absolutely necessary and mandatory for safety as the ultimate backup tool should electronic systems and GPS fail, as well as for traditional navigation.

Which sailing signaling items are mandatory for vessels in Greece?

Mandatory equipment depends on the boat's category and maximum distance from shore. However, basic signaling items required by Greek legislation usually include:
Visual distress signals: Hand flares, smoke signals, and parachute flares (their expiration date must always be checked).
Sound signals: Whistle, fog horn, and/or bell (depending on the length of the vessel).
Other items: Signaling mirror (heliograph), waterproof flashlight, and day shapes (anchoring sphere, motor-sailing cone for sailboats).

How long do marine binoculars and sailing compasses last in sea conditions?

Marine binoculars and sailing compasses are made of durable materials (such as polycarbonate, rubber, and stainless steel) to withstand harsh conditions (saltwater, UV radiation, humidity). With proper maintenance, they can last a lifetime!
After every trip, wipe them carefully with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water to remove salt, but do not place them under pressurized running water. To clean the lenses, use only special microfiber cloths and never rub them when they have dried salt on them, as the crystals will scratch them. Always store them in their case, in a dry, safe, and shaded area inside the boat, away from vibrations.
