For use at sea, binoculars must have specific features:

Waterproofing & Buoyancy: They must be 100% waterproof (often nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging) and ideally floating in case they fall into the sea.
Built-in compass: Helps in immediately locating and taking bearings of other vessels or landmarks on shore.

A marine compass works based on the Earth's magnetic field, submerged in a special liquid to dampen boat vibrations. A fixed steering compass is permanently installed in the cockpit and helps the helmsman maintain a steady course, while a hand bearing compass is used to find your position on a nautical chart by sighting fixed landmarks (e.g., lighthouses, capes).

Sound signals: Whistle, fog horn, and/or bell (depending on the length of the vessel).
Other items: Signaling mirror (heliograph), waterproof flashlight, and day shapes (anchoring sphere, motor-sailing cone for sailboats).

Marine binoculars and sailing compasses are made of durable materials (such as polycarbonate, rubber, and stainless steel) to withstand harsh conditions (saltwater, UV radiation, humidity). With proper maintenance, they can last a lifetime!
After every trip, wipe them carefully with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water to remove salt, but do not place them under pressurized running water. To clean the lenses, use only special microfiber cloths and never rub them when they have dried salt on them, as the crystals will scratch them. Always store them in their case, in a dry, safe, and shaded area inside the boat, away from vibrations.
